Ultra-Trail Angkor is 9 editions old. It runs through the Angkor Archaeological Park — the largest religious monument complex ever built — at night and through dawn. The shortest distance is 8 km. The longest is 100 km, starting at 4:00 AM and running through jungle trails and past ancient temples for up to 28 hours.
There is no other trail race with this course.

- 32–42 km: Experienced trail runners with marathon or ultramarathon background
- 64–100 km: Ultra specialists; the 100 km requires serious heat preparation and prior ultra experience
The Course
Ultra-Trail Angkor uses a combination of paved temple roads and dirt jungle trails through the Angkor park. The terrain is mostly flat — this is not the technical alpine course of European trail races. The challenge comes from the heat, the humidity, the overnight running, and the cumulative distance on the longer routes.
What you run past: Angkor Thom city walls, Bayon, Baphuon, Phimeanakas, Ta Prohm, Preah Khan, and several smaller temple complexes rarely visited by tourists. During the race, the park is closed to regular visitors — you and fellow runners have the temples to yourselves.
Night running: For the 100 km and 64 km, significant portions run in darkness. A quality headlamp with a spare battery is mandatory kit. Many runners describe the experience of running past Bayon's 216 carved stone faces by headlamp at 2 AM — the faces emerging from the darkness, the jungle sounds around you — as unlike anything else in trail racing.
January Weather
January is one of the most comfortable months for running in Siem Reap:
- Temperature: 22–30°C (daytime), ~18°C (night) — the coolest month
- Humidity: ~55–60% — lower than most of the year
- Rain: Minimal. Dry season is well established by January.
For SE Asian running conditions, January is genuinely good. For the 100 km specifically: the cumulative heat as the day progresses is still the primary challenge. Train in warm conditions if targeting the longer distances.

The Villa for a Group of Runners
Ultra-Trail Angkor naturally attracts groups — trail running clubs targeting different distances, friend groups where some run 100 km and some run 8 km, support crew for the ultra runners.
Why the villa works:
- Multiple people running different distances on different days — the villa is a stable base for both race days with consistent logistics
- Post-race pool: Cold water immersion after a long trail race is the most effective immediate recovery tool. The private pool is available at any hour — no pool hours, no waiting
- Outdoor kitchen: Trail runners running 42+ km are often specific about pre-race nutrition. The villa kitchen gives full control — no relying on restaurant timing or hotel breakfast hours at 3 AM start times
- Proximity: 15–20 minutes from the Angkor park start area by tuk-tuk
January is not peak tourist season (that's December). Accommodation is available with 4–6 weeks lead time, though well-reviewed options book up when the race registration opens.
