Chinesisches Neujahr in Siem Reap
Februar ist der beste Monat für Siem Reap: kühlste Temperaturen, klarste Himmel, bestes Fotolicht in Angkor.
Siem Reap in January and February is a secret that Chinese tourists are beginning to discover. The weather is at its best — 25–28°C, dry, clear skies. Angkor Wat is photogenic rather than hazy. The crowds haven't yet hit the April peak. And for a group celebrating the Lunar New Year, the villa model — KTV room, outdoor kitchen for reunion dinner, private pool — fits the Chinese New Year format better than any hotel.

What Happens in Siem Reap During Chinese New Year
Siem Reap has a significant Chinese tourist presence year-round, and Chinese New Year activates several things:
Angkor Night Market: The Angkor Night Market (north of Pub Street) often sets up CNY-specific decorations and lantern displays during the holiday period. The Chinese-Cambodian business community in Siem Reap participates with red decorations and special offerings.
Restaurant special menus: Chinese restaurants near Pub Street and the Old Market area prepare New Year menus. Several Cambodian-Chinese restaurants on the western side of town are good options for group bookings.
Siem Reap River: In some years, paper lanterns are released on the river in the evening during the CNY period — informal community events rather than large organized spectacles.
Why January/February Is Siem Reap's Best Weather Window
January and February sit in the heart of Cambodia's dry season, with conditions genuinely different from other months:
- Temperature: 25–28°C (daytime), 18–22°C (evenings) — January is the coolest month of the year
- Humidity: Low — comfortable for walking, clothes dry quickly, no soaking through shirts after 10 minutes of walking
- Photography light at Angkor: The low winter sun creates longer golden-hour windows; sunrise silhouettes over the Angkor Wat towers are exceptional in January/February
- Crowds: Moderate — the peak Western tourist surge runs November–January; by mid-February it starts to soften
Angkor Wat in January/February
Practical advice for visiting Angkor during CNY season:
- Sunrise: First light at approximately 6:00–6:15 AM. Arrive by 5:30 AM for position at the reflection pools
- Temperature at sunrise: ~20°C — the coolest you'll experience at Angkor all year. A light layer helps
- Photography conditions: Clear skies, excellent contrast, the west-facing moat reflection at its sharpest
- Crowd level: Manageable. Busy at Angkor Wat main temple but not December 26–31 levels
Foreigners pay $37 for a day pass, $62 for 3 days, $72 for a week. Cambodian nationals enter free with national identity card.
Getting to Siem Reap
Direct flights from China: Several airlines operate direct routes to Siem Reap International Airport (REP). Check China Southern, Cambodia Angkor Air, and AirAsia for routes from Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Kunming, Chengdu, and Shanghai. Routes vary by season — check 6–8 weeks ahead as CNY creates demand spikes.
Via Phnom Penh: If no direct route to Siem Reap, fly into Phnom Penh (PNH) — far more Chinese city connections — then connect via Cambodia Angkor Air (45 min, $60–90) or express bus (6.5 hours, $12–15).
From Singapore: Multiple daily flights from Singapore Changi (SIN) to Siem Reap. CNY is a major travel holiday for the overseas Chinese community in Singapore — book well ahead.
From Kuala Lumpur: AirAsia operates Kuala Lumpur → Siem Reap direct. Good frequency, reasonable fares.
The Villa for a Chinese New Year Reunion
The Chinese New Year reunion dinner (年夜饭, niányèfàn) is the most important meal of the year for many families. A private villa solves what a hotel cannot:
KTV room: New Year karaoke is standard evening entertainment for many Chinese families. The villa's KTV room is available every evening at no additional cost — no bar minimums, no time limits, no strangers around. This typically becomes the core evening activity from day one.
Outdoor kitchen: The villa has a fully equipped outdoor kitchen — gas stove, prep counter, large communal dining table. For a CNY reunion, this allows the family cook to prepare traditional dishes in the space, or to order in and eat together properly. Restaurant dinners for 14 people are expensive and loud; cooking together at the villa is how the reunion dinner is supposed to feel.
Private pool: Yours alone. No sign-in, no strangers, no pool hours. For a January group trip with children and grandparents, the pool is the communal space between temple visits.
