Siem Reap is one of the best places in Cambodia to celebrate Khmer New Year. While Phnom Penh has larger crowds and louder street parties, Siem Reap combines the celebration with unmatched access to Angkor — including free entry for Cambodian nationals with their national ID.

When Is Khmer New Year?

Khmer New Year (ចូលឆ្នាំខ្មែរ / Chaul Chnam Thmey) falls on April 13–16 every year — three consecutive public holidays that most Cambodians use for travel. It's the longest national holiday of the year and the most important.

April 13 is the biggest day: the official start of the new year, marked by water splashing, temple visits, and family gatherings. April 14 (Wanabot) and April 15 (Leung Sak) are calmer and better for temple visits without the largest crowds.

What Happens in Siem Reap

Angkor Wat New Year ceremony: Monks conduct Buddhist ceremonies at Angkor Wat at sunrise on April 13. Families make offerings and pray for the new year. If you've only ever visited Angkor Wat as a tourist attraction, seeing it during a living religious ceremony is entirely different.

Water splashing: The main action is at Pub Street, the Old Market area, and along Sivatha Boulevard. Locals and tourists alike arm themselves with water guns and buckets. It starts around 10 AM and runs until evening. Wear clothes you don't mind getting wet — there is no avoiding this.

Traditional games: The riverside park near Siem Reap River sets up traditional Khmer New Year games: Boh Angkunh (throwing seeds), Leak Kansaeng (hide the scarf), Chol Chhoung (throwing balls). These are increasingly rare to find in Phnom Penh's city celebration — Siem Reap keeps more of the traditional format.

Angkor temples (free for Cambodian nationals): April 15–16 are significantly calmer than April 13–14. If your group can be flexible, do the water splashing on April 13, rest on April 14, then visit Angkor on April 15 and 16 when the crowds thin. Bring your original national identity card — not a photocopy.

Booking Reality: Why April Is Different

Hotels and villas in Siem Reap sell out 4–6 weeks before Khmer New Year. This is not an exaggeration. April is the most-booked period of the entire year.

The villa advantage: you book the entire property for your group — no risk of neighboring rooms being unavailable or properties selling out in pieces. If you're 10–16 people, you need one booking.

Book by early March for Khmer New Year. By mid-March, options narrow significantly. By April 1, you're paying premium prices if anything remains.

Prices run 2–3× normal rates across all accommodation types during April 13–16. The villa rate ($250–350/night for the entire property) becomes more cost-effective than ever when compared to individual hotel rooms at holiday pricing.

April Weather: What to Know

April is Cambodia's hottest month — 38–40°C (100–104°F) with high humidity before the rains arrive in May. This is not ideal temple weather.

The practical approach:

3-Night Khmer New Year Itinerary

April 12 (evening):

April 13 (New Year's Day):

April 14:

April 15:

April 16:

Cost for a Group of 12

Item Per Person
Bus (return, Phnom Penh) $25–30
Villa (3 nights, $320/night ÷ 12) $80
Food (3 days, mix of cooking and restaurants) $40
Angkor Wat (free for Cambodians) $0
Activities, tuktuks $20
Total ~$165–170/person

For comparison: a solo hotel room at holiday pricing in Siem Reap runs $60–100/night in April. Three nights per person in a hotel costs $180–300 before food. The villa is the better deal by every measure, and you have the property to yourselves.
